Gear Distribution Program
Starting in the summer of 2007, To Return created a gear distribution program in Moshi, Tanzania to provide porters and guides with access to suitable mountain gear. Run by our local director, Erick Joseph, the gear program aims to equip permanent porters (those who make the majority of their living on Mt. Kilimanjaro) with proper equipment including rain jacket and pants, insulating layers, backpack, boots, sleeping bags and socks. It is our aim that all porters and guides on Mt. Kilimanjaro have access to proper equipment. With thousands of porters and guides living around Mt. Kilimanjaro and making their living on its slopes, this is a large objective that To Return tackles one coat at a time.
With your help in 2008, we donated 20 waterproof jackets, 37 insulating jackets, 10 pairs of waterproof pants, 8 pairs of insulating pants, 40 hats, 15 pairs of gloves, 6 backpacks, and a wide array of shoes, boots, socks, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and headlamps.
Have new or slightly used clothing that you would like to donate to the porters on Kilimanjaro? If you are heading to Moshi, Tanzania in the near future, our first choice would be that you donate the gear in person. Alternatively, you can mail the gear to us here in Basalt, Colorado and we will transport it to Tanzania as part of our annual visit. Contact us for more information.
